Mixed Emotions: Anticipation Despite Setbacks

David Brooks, a veteran of the Welsh national team since 2017, is preparing for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Brooks recently garnered praise for his dramatic 96th-minute equalizer against North Macedonia in March, securing Craig Bellamy’s unbeaten record as head coach.

This week, however, congratulations flowed for a different reason: Brooks and his wife, Flora, announced they are expecting their first child in November.

This news is particularly poignant for Brooks, who battled Stage Two Hodgkin lymphoma in 2021. The possibility of parenthood was uncertain during his treatment.

“Starting a family was always a goal for my wife and me,” the 27-year-old shared. “After my diagnosis, there were no guarantees, a chance it might not be possible. I’m incredibly fortunate it happened naturally. There were tears of joy, and we’re eagerly anticipating our child’s arrival.”

Diagnosed at 24, Brooks underwent several months of chemotherapy before being declared cancer-free in May 2022. He returned to professional football with Bournemouth in March 2023 and rejoined the Wales squad that summer.

He openly discussed the “dark times” he endured.

Now, two years post-diagnosis, Brooks reflects on his role as a senior player within a transitioning Welsh squad. Joe Allen’s recent retirement further emphasizes this shift, as does Aaron Ramsey’s ongoing injury absence.

With 33 caps, Brooks embraces the leadership responsibilities. The departure of Allen, Chris Gunter, and Gareth Bale since the 2022 World Cup necessitates a rebuilding phase.

“Bale and Allen were phenomenal; irreplaceable,” he admits. “But there’s exciting young talent, and players like myself who’ve been waiting for opportunities. This is our chance to collectively move forward, building on a strong foundation.”

Wales’ current unbeaten streak under Bellamy stands at eight games, thanks in part to Brooks’ crucial goal against North Macedonia.

The team anticipates extending this run against Liechtenstein, before facing a more formidable challenge against Belgium.

Brooks reflects on his North Macedonia goal: “It wasn’t my best, but it crossed the line, and that’s what matters. It was a significant goal, improving our standings.”

Wales currently sits second in their group, narrowly behind North Macedonia, although Belgium’s games are yet to be played.

Wales’ Wilson Targets More History Against Belgium

Historically, matches against Belgium might have instilled apprehension. However, under Bellamy’s leadership, Wales approaches the game with confidence, not fear.

Brooks describes Bellamy’s style as “intense” yet motivating. The team’s ambition to perform for their manager is evident.

“His passion for Wales is undeniable, and it’s inspiring,” Brooks adds. “We strive to play our best for him, embracing his system. Our unbeaten streak is a solid base, and we’re focusing on improving our attacking threat and defensive solidity. We’re on a promising trajectory.”
