Year-Round Christmas Spirit: A Retailer’s Pledge

A Jersey-based charity dedicated to supporting vulnerable individuals says it embodies “the Christmas spirit right through the year.”

The Grace Trust, which aids approximately 700 to 750 people annually who are grappling with poverty, loneliness, or addiction, reports a wider demographic of individuals seeking assistance, including an increase in older adults requiring community support.

General Manager Vinni Jones stated that the charity aims to uplift individuals through its drop-in center located on Lewis Street in St Helier.

The organization supports 500 individuals each year through its food bank and also provides activities such as singing, art sessions, and Saturday lunches.

Mr. Jones noted the food bank offered additional festive items, and recently, 92 individuals attended a Christmas meal at St Paul’s Centre, supported by 20 volunteers.

Entertainment was provided by Fiddler’s Green and the trust’s Parklife choir.

He added that the charity sees an increase in demand during the Christmas season, as it can be a particularly difficult period for many.

“Just come down, knock on the window and we’ll give you what we’ve got.”

Mr. Jones emphasized that “we can offer a lot more than simply the food and Christmas goodies,” encouraging people to explore the array of activities available.

The charity also maintains a fund to support young mothers and collaborates with other agencies to provide toy vouchers during the Christmas season.

Year-round support remains available for islanders facing hardship.

“It’s just a matter of being able to offer that understanding and to talk about January, talk about February for them. We’ll still be here for you,” Mr. Jones affirmed.

The government has also reminded islanders about mental health support over Christmas.

There is 24 hour support available from the Adult Mental Health crisis team, on 445 290 and online support from Together All.
