West Indies T20 Star Nicholas Pooran Retires at 29

Nicholas Pooran, a prominent figure in West Indies cricket, captained the ODI team in 2022.

At 29, renowned T20 batsman Nicholas Pooran has announced his retirement from international cricket with the West Indies.

The Trinidadian played 167 times for the West Indies. This decision allows him to focus on lucrative franchise leagues.

He recently opted out of the ongoing T20 series against England to rest after competing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Lucknow Super Giants.

He also has a contract with Major League Cricket (MLC) this summer.

Cricket West Indies stated, external: “We commend his accomplishments and thank him for the joy he brought fans regionally and globally.

“We wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

While Pooran isn’t the first to prioritize franchise leagues over international cricket – South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen did so last week – his retirement is significant due to his age and prominence.

West Indies captain Shai Hope addressed Pooran’s absence from the England series last week, stating it wouldn’t affect future selection.

Pooran reportedly informed West Indies of his decision on Monday.

His last West Indies appearance was in December 2024 in a T20 series against Bangladesh. His last ODI was in July 2023, and he never played Test cricket.

Pooran holds the record for most T20I appearances for the West Indies (106) and is their leading T20I run-scorer with 2,275 runs.
