Vietnam Issues Evacuation Order for Over 500,000 Amid Approaching Typhoon

Vietnamese authorities have ordered the evacuation of over 586,000 individuals in anticipation of Typhoon Kajiki’s imminent arrival.

Forecasters indicate the storm currently possesses winds of 166km/h (103mph) and is projected to intensify before making landfall early Monday.

Residents of the central provinces, including Thanh Hoa, Quang Tri, Hue, and Da Nang, have been mandated to evacuate. Flights have been grounded, and maritime vessels have been instructed to remain ashore.

The typhoon is traversing near Hainan in China, where the national weather agency has issued a forecast of up to 320mm (12.6in) of rainfall.

According to BBC Weather, Typhoon Kajiki is expected to diminish in strength as it moves inland over Vietnam; however, it will still subject the country to winds reaching 200km/h and anticipated rainfall between 300-400mm.

Additionally, storm surges ranging from 2-4m (6.6-13ft) are anticipated.

Authorities have advised individuals within the projected path to remain indoors after 14:00 GMT on Sunday. Military personnel have been deployed to provide assistance, officials stated.

“The situation is extremely dangerous and not safe for any vehicles or structures such as tourism or fishing vessels and aquaculture raising facilities,” AFP news agency quoted officials from the ministry of agriculture and environment as saying.

Vietnam Airlines has cancelled a minimum of 22 flights to and from central cities scheduled for Sunday and Monday.

Officials express concerns that the typhoon could rival the devastation caused by Typhoon Yagi in September of the previous year – a catastrophic event that resulted in hundreds of fatalities across the region, including 300 in Vietnam alone.
