Uzbekistan Reports Over 23,000 Acute Intestinal Infection Cases in First Half of Year: Sanitary Committee

Uzbekistan recorded 23,558 cases of acute intestinal infections between January and June 2025, according to a statement from the Press Service of the Committee on Sanitary-Epidemiological Welfare and Public Health.

The highest incidence rates were observed in Tashkent, as well as in the Kashkadarya and Syrdarya regions, and the Republic of Karakalpakstan.

Data indicates that intestinal infections were most prevalent among young children.

Experts suggest that acute intestinal infections are particularly common during the summer months. Contributing factors include the consumption of improperly stored or expired food, poor hygiene during the preparation of baby food, eating unwashed fruits, swimming in open bodies of water contaminated with microbes, and contact with infected individuals.

Sources of infection can also include substandard food products prepared and sold under unsanitary conditions, such as soft drinks, juices, ayran, and others.
For disease prevention, the Committee recommends drinking boiled water, thoroughly washing food, and strictly adhering to personal hygiene practices.

According to the WHO, over 1 billion people worldwide suffer from diarrhea annually, resulting in 5 to 10 million deaths.

Acute intestinal infections encompass diseases such as typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever, salmonellosis, dysentery, viral hepatitis A, cholera, and a range of other ailments.
