Uzbekistan Appoints First-Ever Ambassador to Sri Lanka

Alisher Tukhtayev has been appointed as the first Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Sri Lanka. He also serves as the Ambassador to Pakistan.

Uzbekistan’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Sri Lanka, residing in Islamabad, Alisher Tukhtayev, presented copies of his credentials to the Chief of State Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, Rohana Ambagolle, reports Dunyo News Agency.

During the meeting, Rohana Ambagolle expressed sincere gratitude to the leadership of Uzbekistan for the appointment of the first Ambassador to Sri Lanka. He stated that this step is an important political decision towards strengthening friendly relations between the two countries and will give a new impetus to bilateral cooperation.

Sri Lanka’s openness to a new format of cooperation with Uzbekistan was confirmed, and the initiatives of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev aimed at rapprochement with the Global South, ensuring food security, and strengthening regional interconnectedness were highly appreciated.

The Sri Lankan representative expressed confidence that Alisher Tukhtayev’s activities in Colombo will create a solid foundation for systematic and effective work in all areas.

It was emphasized that Sri Lanka is interested in the rapid expansion of practical cooperation with Uzbekistan in all areas, especially in trade, logistics, education, and tourism.

The parties exchanged views on the development of economic diplomacy and the prospects for mutual trade and economic relations. It was noted that the current volume of bilateral trade is unsatisfactory, and an agreement was reached on taking concrete measures to bring this figure to $50 million in the near future.

To increase export-import indicators, issues of joint development of transport and logistics solutions, and the introduction of online platforms and programs using information technologies were discussed.
