US National Among Fatalities in Cuban Boat Incident, Confirms US Official

A U.S. official has confirmed that at least one American citizen was fatally shot and another wounded during an incident Wednesday involving Cuban officials intercepting a speedboat near the Cuban coast.

According to Cuban authorities, border guards opened fire, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to the remaining six on board the Florida-registered vessel. Cuba alleges the ten individuals aboard the boat were planning “an infiltration with terrorist aims” and initiated the gunfire.

The U.S. official stated a third individual held a U.S. K-1 visa, designated for fiancées of American citizens. The boat’s owner claimed the vessel was stolen by an employee.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated Washington is investigating the “highly unusual” incident.

Cuban authorities maintain that all ten individuals were Cuban nationals residing in the United States.

Furthermore, an eleventh person has been arrested and reportedly confessed to involvement in the alleged plot, according to Cuban officials.

The interior ministry reported that the speedboat entered Cuban territorial waters, approximately “one nautical mile off Cayo Falcones” on Cuba’s northern coast, at the time of the interception.

Authorities stated that the commander of the Cuban vessel sustained injuries during the ensuing exchange of gunfire.

Cuban authorities further asserted that the majority of those involved had “prior records involving criminal and violent activity.”

A statement indicated that handguns, assault rifles, improvised explosive devices, and other tactical equipment were recovered from the speedboat.
