In a wide-ranging address to the United Nations, Donald Trump has sharply criticized other nations’ immigration and climate policies, while also directing criticism at the UN itself.
Addressing the UN General Assembly in New York, Trump called for an end to the “failed experiment of open borders” and disputed UN climate change predictions, drawing audible reactions from the assembly.
During the nearly hour-long speech, Trump reiterated his claim of having stopped “seven wars” since returning to the White House and accused the UN of failing to assist in these efforts.
He questioned the UN’s efficacy, stating it was “not living up to its potential.”
While delegates largely remained impassive, some visibly shifted in their seats as the US president spoke before the UN for the first time in his second term.
Several delegates were seen shaking their heads as he dismissed climate change, labeling it the “greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world,” and rejected the use of renewable energy sources.
“The entire globalist concept, asking successful industrialized nations to inflict pain on themselves and radically disrupt their entire societies must be rejected completely and totally,” he stated.
The overwhelming consensus among scientists and experts is that climate change is real and driven by human activity.
Trump also criticized the UN’s support for asylum seekers, asserting that the organization was “funding an assault on western countries” through financial assistance.
He specifically targeted Europe, claiming it was in “serious trouble” due to migration.
“We have a big heart for places that are struggling – we have to solve the problem in their countries,” he said.
Trump falsely claimed that London sought to adopt Sharia law – an Islamic legal system – and singled out the city’s mayor Sadiq Khan for criticism.
A spokesperson for Khan told the BBC: “We are not going to dignify his appalling and bigoted comments with a response.”
Trump’s speech also addressed the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. He advocated for a ceasefire in Gaza but criticized the recognition of a Palestinian state by some nations, arguing it “would be a reward” for Hamas.
Regarding Ukraine, he stated it was “embarrassing” that some European countries were purchasing oil and gas from Russia despite opposing its full-scale invasion. He also commented that the war was “making Russia look bad”.
Following the address, Trump stated on his Truth Social platform that he believed the speech had been “very well received.”
He met with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres after the speech – the first such meeting of his second term – during which he affirmed that the US was “behind the United Nations 100%” even though he “may disagree with it sometimes.”
Guterres told Trump he believed there were “many areas where we can cooperate in a positive way, and I would think that the most important is peace”.
Later, Trump is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky, who will be seeking firm commitments from Trump regarding continued US support for Kyiv.
He is also scheduled to meet with officials from several Middle Eastern countries, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, before hosting a reception for more than 100 world leaders on Tuesday.
