U.S. President Donald Trump announced Monday the imposition of a 25% tariff on goods originating from nations with commercial links to Iran, a measure poised to intensify pressure on Tehran amidst ongoing anti-government demonstrations now in their third week.
President Trump stated via social media that the tariff is “effective immediately,” while refraining from specifying the criteria defining “doing business” with Iran.
Key trading partners of Iran include China, alongside the United Arab Emirates, India, and Turkey.
This tariff follows President Trump’s prior warning of potential military intervention should Tehran inflict harm on protesters. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt affirmed Monday that military options, including airstrikes, remain “on the table.”
The U.S. President and his administration have alluded to “very strong options” for intervention in Iran, including potential military action.
The BBC reports receiving eyewitness accounts detailing security forces’ actions against anti-government protesters nationwide.
Separately, the U.S. President has advocated for a one-year cap of 10% on credit card interest rates.
Authorities are reportedly responding to protests with a severe security crackdown and a near-total internet shutdown.
Concerns are mounting for Craig and Lindsay Foreman, residents of East Sussex, who their family reports are at risk within the Iranian prison system.
