In a series of upsets at the English Open, world number one Judd Trump suffered a 4-3 defeat against Elliot Slessor, while Shaun Murphy also lost by the same scoreline to Jackson Page in the fifth round.
Slessor, currently ranked 23rd, established an early 2-0 lead during Thursday’s afternoon session at the Brentwood Centre, highlighted by a break of 67.
Trump, who is still seeking his first semi-final appearance of the season, responded with two half-century breaks to win the subsequent three frames.
However, Slessor regained his composure, compiling a break of 79 to force a deciding frame. He then secured his quarter-final berth against either Mark Allen or Ding Junhui with a decisive run of 64.
Elsewhere, reigning Masters champion Shaun Murphy, after trailing 3-1, fought back to level the score at 3-3 against Page, aided by breaks of 93 and 102.
Despite opportunities for both players in the final frame, Welshman Jackson Page ultimately prevailed, securing his victory and a quarter-final match against either Wu Yize or Mark Selby.
In other action, China’s Zhou Yuelong advanced to the quarter-finals with a 4-2 victory over Barry Hawkins, fueled by breaks of 84 and 71.
