Troy Deeney Earns Premier League Team of the Week Spot

Each week, BBC football analyst Troy Deeney presents his Premier League Team of the Week and Manager of the Week.

Here are Deeney’s selections for this week. Do you agree with his choices? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Caoimhin Kelleher (Brentford): Facing Aston Villa with ten men, I could have selected the entire defensive line. Kelleher has not only stepped up as their first-choice goalkeeper but also demonstrated why he chose to leave Liverpool. Many might have suggested he stay, anticipating Alisson’s eventual decline and his opportunity. Instead, he departed and has been outstanding for Brentford, a team that complements his abilities.

Marcos Senesi (Bournemouth): In my opinion, he’s been one of the season’s top performers. He’s consistently reliable, handles his responsibilities effectively, and executes everything efficiently without overcomplicating matters.

Gabriel (Arsenal): Leeds put in a decent effort, but Gabriel was a pillar of strength and reassurance. He executed his duties flawlessly and understands the danger he poses during set-pieces. This was likely his finest defensive showing of the season.

Kristoffer Ajer (Brentford): A commanding and dependable defender. He celebrated tackles early on, which isn’t typically my preference, but when that intensity and commitment are maintained throughout the match, with unwavering dedication, I’ll certainly commend it.

Enzo Fernandez (Chelsea): He scored the decisive goal to complete their impressive comeback. He often faces criticism, which I believe is unwarranted. Some may not rate him highly, possibly due to his transfer fee and the expectation that comes with winning a World Cup. However, he’s a skilled midfielder, an effective captain, and maintains composure on the ball during challenging moments.

Florian Wirtz (Liverpool): I’ve consistently said that it was only a matter of time before a player of his caliber found his rhythm. Over the past six weeks, we’ve witnessed the true Florian Wirtz – dictating the tempo of games with an exceptional passing range. His goals and assists are now flowing, and he’s looking formidable.

Alex Scott (Bournemouth): He faced a challenging day against a strong Wolves side. After a difficult period with England, he has regained his form. It will be interesting to see if he can make a late push for the World Cup squad as the season progresses.

Noni Madueke (Arsenal): The shift from expecting to be on the bench to starting just minutes before kickoff is a significant adjustment. His mental fortitude to perform under those circumstances reflects positively on both Mikel Arteta and Madueke. Despite the goal being credited as an own goal, his goal and assist earn him a place in the team.

Habib Diarra (Sunderland): While the stats may show one goal and one own goal, it essentially boils down to two goals for him. His performance was outstanding. The wingers tormented Burnley, and he was central to their success.

Dominic Solanke (Tottenham): He likely scored the two most unusual goals of his career. The first was questionable, but the second was a stroke of genius, backheeling the ball over the 6ft 6in Gianluigi Donnarumma. It’s encouraging to see him back in form. Could he make a late bid for the England squad if he stays fit?

Hugo Ekitike (Liverpool): Could he be the signing of the season? Possibly. He continues to build momentum each week. It’s going to be a challenge for Alexander Isak to reclaim his spot in the team.

Mikel Arteta (Arsenal): He orchestrated a remarkable away victory at Elland Road. Despite Bukayo Saka’s injury during warm-ups, he made no excuses. He brought in Noni Madueke, who repaid his faith. It was an exceptional performance in a venue where many teams struggle.
