A 42-year-old man has been charged with terrorism and assault with intent to murder following the stabbing of 11 individuals at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan.
Authorities report that the suspect used a folding knife to attack five men and six women, including a store employee, in the Saturday afternoon incident.
The victims, whose ages range from 21 to 84, are expected to recover from their injuries. The suspect, identified as Bradford James Gille, is scheduled for arraignment on either Monday or Tuesday.
While the motive remains under investigation, authorities stated the stabbings appeared random. The terrorism charge is based on the belief that the mass attack was intended to incite fear and inflict broad harm within the community.
Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea told reporters Sunday that deputies arrived at the scene within two minutes of receiving the first emergency call.
“Upon arrival, deputies found multiple citizens, including one armed with a pistol, confronting the suspect in the parking lot, preventing him from further harm and escape,” Sheriff Shea stated. “The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.”
Sheriff Shea added that the suspect’s motive “has yet to be determined.”
“Our detectives, with the assistance of the FBI, conducted an extensive interview, which will be a key component of the ongoing investigation,” he said.
Walmart spokesperson Joe Pennington released a statement saying, “Violence of this nature is unacceptable.”
“Our thoughts are with those injured, and we express our gratitude for the rapid response of first responders.”
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed on Saturday that federal personnel were dispatched to provide support to local law enforcement.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer commented, “Our thoughts are with the victims and the community as they grapple with this senseless act of violence.”
Traverse City is located approximately 255 miles (410km) northwest of Detroit.
