The Tate Modern has announced an extension to its weekend opening hours beginning this autumn.
Starting September 26th, the renowned London art gallery will remain open until 9:00 PM BST on Friday and Saturday evenings.
This decision aims to broaden access for visitors, particularly younger audiences, seeking to experience the gallery after work hours.
The move follows the notable success of the Tate Modern Lates, a series of curated evening events that have drawn over 750,000 attendees since 2016.
Currently, the Tate Modern operates daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with free admission to the permanent collection.
Karin Hindsbo, Director of the Tate Modern, commented: “Over the last decade, Tate Modern Lates have become a cornerstone of London’s nightlife, especially among young Londoners eager to engage with the city’s vibrant cultural landscape.”
She added that the extended hours would further enhance the gallery’s accessibility to a wider public.
The Mayor of London has stated that this initiative will reinforce London’s position as the “cultural capital of the world, boasting the best nightlife available.”
The Tate Modern Lates program will continue alongside the newly implemented extended weekend hours.
These events, held at the end of each month, feature a diverse range of activities, including artist talks, workshops, film screenings, and live music performances.
Notably, last August saw a takeover by British rapper Little Simz, attracting 18,500 visitors to her curated exhibition and discussion.
The upcoming Lates events are scheduled for August 28th and September 26th.
