Spoiler warning: This contains some details about what has happened in the show so far, but does not reveal anything about the final four episodes.
As the holiday season approaches, fans of “Stranger Things” anticipate another offering: the conclusion to the acclaimed series.
Netflix’s popular sci-fi fantasy horror show, known for its nostalgic nods to the 1980s, is set to conclude its run.
The residents of Hawkins were last seen facing grave danger in the season’s opening, confronting Demogorgons and the formidable Vecna, setting the stage for a climactic showdown.
The final three episodes will be available on Boxing Day in the UK at 01:00 GMT, and in the US on Christmas Day at 20:00 EST.
The series’ concluding episode, clocking in at two hours and five minutes, will be available for streaming in the UK on New Year’s Day from 01:00.
In the US, viewers can tune in on December 31 at 20:00 EST, or experience a communal viewing in select cinemas across the US and Canada.
Hawkins found itself under siege, with dimensional rifts unleashing Demogorgons from the Upside Down, leading to a military quarantine.
The pursuit of Eleven, portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown, intensified, as she and Hopper (David Harbour) faced formidable adversaries in the Upside Down, including government scientist Dr. Kay (Linda Hamilton).
A key revelation saw Will exhibiting supernatural abilities, while a mysterious presence emerged in a cave with Max, Holly, and a younger, more unsettling Henry Creel.
With unresolved plotlines abound, fans hope the finale delivers, especially given the mixed reactions to the conclusions of series such as “Game of Thrones” and “Lost”.
Executive producer Shawn Levy assures viewers that the final, extended episode has been meticulously crafted with the global fanbase in mind.
“They have had their hearts broken by shows they loved, that failed fans in the end,” Levy stated to Variety, emphasizing the Duffer brothers’ commitment to delivering a satisfying conclusion.
Questions remain, such as the significance of Henry Kreel’s apprehension outside the cave where Max Mayfield and Holly Wheeler seek shelter.
Theories circulate on platforms like Reddit and TikTok, drawing connections to the stage play “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” the details of which will remain undisclosed here.
It is known that Henry murdered his mother and sister, framing his father. Subsequently, Henry ended up at Hawkins Lab, where Eleven transformed him into Vecna.
Holly (Nell Fisher), sister to Mike and Nancy, was abducted by a Demogorgon, with her mother mounting a valiant defense.
The significance of Holly possessing a cassette tape of Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now,” given to her by Henry, remains to be seen.
The Netflix website Tudum explains that Henry was nicknamed “Mr. Whatsit” after “Mrs Whatsit from A Wrinkle in Time, Madeleine L’Engle’s classic 1962 science fantasy novel”.
Max (Sadie Sink) remains in a coma, a result of her near-fatal encounter with Vecna.
The group, alongside Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder), is dedicated to protecting their friends and the inhabitants of Hawkins.
The connection between music and survival in Hawkins is still under investigation.
Joyce Montepiedra suggested in GameRant that “music helps redirect the victim’s attention back to reality and away from Vecna’s mind games”.
Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” served as a lifeline for Max, grounding her in reality.
Additionally, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong’s “Dream A Little Dream Of Me” aided Henry Creel’s father, Victor, in resisting his son’s control.
Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) and Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke) discovered that music can penetrate consciousness and disrupt Vecna’s influence.
Montepiedra also highlights the significance of Hawkins’ radio station, hosted by Robin and Steve Harrington (Joe Keery).
She writes, “Introducing a radio station in season five is intentional and serves a purpose.”
“Radio stations are ideal for reaching the masses from a singular location.”
“If the main characters gain control of the radio station, they can provide the citizens of Hawkins with constant protection in the guise of entertainment.”
Noah Schnapp recently shared with Deadline that Will’s storyline would be further explored.
“For Will, we start to learn the parallels between Will and Vecna,” he said.
“The Harry Potter-Voldemort relationship felt very close to Will and Vecna, just kind of exploring those parallels and what that means.”
He expressed satisfaction with the show’s conclusion.
“I feel very satisfied and excited for all our characters and how the show wraps up,” he remarked.
“I think it does a great job closing everyone’s individual story and doing a service to all of them.”
Despite the potential for a sequel, the Duffer brothers have opted against it.
“Stranger Things” has dominated Netflix’s Top 10 in all 93 countries measured by the company, according to Variety, with season four becoming the first English-language series to surpass one billion hours streamed.
Ross Duffer stated to GamesRadar, “This really is the end of the story of Eleven and Mike and Lucas and Dustin and Steve and all these characters, and Hawkins specifically.”
Matt Duffer added, “There’s not really anything else worth exploring.
“The book is closed, and the ending wouldn’t be very impactful if we left it cracked open for some sort of sequel.”
