Steps Star Ian Watkins Honored at LGBT Awards

Steps singer Ian “H” Watkins received an honor at the British LGBT Awards.

The pop star was recognized for his LGBTQ+ advocacy and organizing pride events, notably founding Cowbridge Pride in Wales, which raises funds for local LGBTQ+ causes.

Watkins described receiving the award as an “emotional” experience, emphasizing the importance of continued work beyond celebratory events. He stated, “Tonight is a celebration, but the real work starts when everyone goes home.”

Actor Billy Porter also received a special award, acknowledging his contributions to stage and screen, and his impactful work raising HIV awareness. Porter publicly disclosed his HIV-positive status in 2021 after a 14-year private battle.

The British LGBT Awards, held annually since 2014, are a significant event for the LGBTQ+ community. This year’s ceremony drew hundreds of celebrities, activists, and allies.

Co-host Scott Mills, a past recipient of the LGBT+ advocacy award, highlighted the importance of recognizing businesses promoting inclusion. He emphasized, “It’s about creating a more inclusive society where people are respected and valued at work.”

Founder Sarah Garrett MBE stated the awards celebrate “our community and those who uplift it.” Past winners include notable figures such as Adele Roberts, Tom Daley, and David Tennant.
