Charlie Smyth contributed five field goals and two extra points in the New Orleans Saints’ victory over the New York Jets.
Charlie Smyth celebrated his new three-year contract extension by scoring 17 points in the New Orleans Saints’ dominant 29-6 win against the New York Jets.
The former Gaelic football player secured a coveted spot on the Saints’ 53-man roster, along with a new contract, after his game-winning kick against the Carolina Panthers.
Having been elevated from the Saints’ practice squad on three prior occasions, the 24-year-old’s future with the team hinged on either a permanent roster retention or release.
Smyth delivered his most impressive NFL performance to date in Sunday’s triumph over the Jets, successfully executing five field goals and two extra point attempts.
“I want to commend the offense and defense today; we are beginning to demonstrate true complementary football,” Smyth stated following the win.
“The support from everyone in New Orleans has been extraordinary. This team has remained united, and that is why we are seeing the wins materialize.”
Over his four NFL appearances, the Saints have secured victories in three games, marked by a successful onside kick (with a 7% success rate), a game-winning kick, and a 17-point single-game performance.
Smyth Commits to Saints with New Three-Year Deal
Smyth initiated his scoring with a 35-yard field goal, followed by successful attempts from 49 and 36 yards.
Despite missing a 60-yard attempt at the end of the first half, with the Saints leading 9-6, he rebounded with his fourth successful field goal from 50 yards.
His fifth field goal, from 39 yards, matched the Saints’ franchise record, and he added two extra points as the hosts secured a comfortable victory.
Smyth’s point total ranks as the joint-third highest this season, trailing only Jason Myers of the Seattle Seahawks (18 points) and Evan McPherson of the Cincinnati Bengals (20 points against the Baltimore Ravens).
His five successful field goals represent the second-highest number achieved in an NFL game this season, behind Myers’ six against the Indianapolis Colts in the previous week.
The New Orleans Saints will conclude their regular season with road games against the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons.
