Sky is reportedly planning to eliminate 600 positions in the UK as part of a strategic realignment towards its streaming services.
The media conglomerate has initiated a consultation process regarding proposed organizational changes affecting approximately 900 roles. However, the company anticipates a net reduction of 600 positions.
It is understood that roughly two-thirds of the affected roles are located at Sky’s facilities in Leeds, London, and Livingston, West Lothian.
Since 2023, Sky has reduced its workforce by nearly 3,000 employees, including engineers responsible for satellite dish installations. Earlier this year, the company announced the closure of three call centers, resulting in the elimination of 2,000 jobs.
Sky, which employs over 20,000 individuals in the UK, is reportedly seeking to concentrate its resources on enhancing its digital and television offerings, rather than developing new platforms.
According to sources within the broadcaster, the job reductions are not driven by cost-cutting measures or individual performance evaluations.
A Sky spokesperson stated that the company has recently launched a suite of products, including Sky Glass, Sky Stream, and a full fiber broadband service.
“Looking ahead, we are evolving our strategy to deliver the next generation of customer experiences by investing in digital-first service, compelling content, and enhanced product performance, all powered by global innovation,” the spokesperson said.
Matt Trickett, Head of Media at Ampere Analysis, commented: “Restructures are always challenging for those impacted, but at a high level, this is likely to affect less than 5% of the overall workforce, considering redeployment opportunities.”
He added that the cuts are “aimed at addressing overlapping internal functions and shifting priorities, as the company focuses on its Sky Glass and Sky Stream TV products.”
