Scott Carson made two appearances in six years at Manchester City
Veteran goalkeeper Scott Carson has officially retired from professional football after a distinguished 21-year career.
The 40-year-old’s departure from Manchester City followed the expiration of his contract this summer, concluding a six-year stint where he secured four Premier League titles and a Champions League victory under Pep Guardiola’s management.
Carson, whose professional journey began with Leeds United in 2004, represented a total of 10 clubs and earned four caps for the England national team.
In a statement posted on Instagram, Carson remarked: “After an incredible journey between the posts, it’s time to hang up the gloves.”
“Football has given me everything – memories, friendships, and moments I’ll never forget. Thank you to every team-mate, coach, fan, and club that’s been part of my the ride.”
“It’s been an honour.”
Prior to his time at City, Carson also played for Liverpool during their Champions League, FA Cup, and Super Cup triumphs. He further amassed over 100 appearances each for Derby County and West Bromwich Albion.
However, it was with Manchester City that he experienced significant success, including the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League treble in 2023, following an initial two-season loan from Derby in 2019.
Carson became a popular figure among supporters, despite playing a limited 117 minutes as the third-choice goalkeeper behind Ederson and Stefan Ortega for much of his tenure.
His final appearance came as a late substitute in a Champions League last-16 second-leg draw against Sporting in March 2022.
Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji, currently on loan at Inter Milan, lauded Carson as an “absolute legend” in response to the announcement, while former teammate Fernandinho referred to him as “The Goat.”
Norwegian striker Erling Haaland, among other current and former City players, commented: “Miss you pal, all the best.”
Derby County, where Carson spent six years, extended their well wishes on Instagram: “Wishing all the best to Scott Carson. Congratulations on a magnificent career, Scott.”
