Scottish FA chief executive Ian Maxwell confirmed that the organization is actively identifying potential successors for national team head coach Steve Clarke, whose contract expires in 13 months. Maxwell, who also served as CEO when Clarke was appointed in May 2019, acknowledged the need for succession planning.
The Scottish FA is proactively seeking potential candidates for the national team manager position as Steve Clarke’s contract nears its end.
Under Clarke’s leadership, Scotland has qualified for consecutive European Championships and is currently aiming for their first men’s World Cup appearance since 1998. Clarke himself indicated a 75% chance he won’t renew his contract.
Maxwell explained to BBC Scotland the importance of proactive planning, stating, “Succession planning requires constant vigilance, as managers may depart unexpectedly.” He emphasized the current focus remains on Clarke and the team’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

While acknowledging the ongoing search for potential replacements, Maxwell stressed the immediate priority is securing World Cup qualification. Scotland’s qualifying campaign begins September 5th against Denmark.
Maxwell highlighted the shared ambition of Clarke, the team, and the nation to reach the World Cup. He underscored the need for collective support to achieve this goal. Clarke’s tenure, following Alex McLeish’s second stint, is nearing Craig Brown’s record of 71 matches managed (1993-2002).
Despite recent setbacks, including a 4-0 friendly win against Liechtenstein, Maxwell emphasized the broader perspective of Clarke’s accomplishments, including consecutive Euro qualifications and promotion in the Nations League. He advocates for assessing Clarke’s impact beyond the recent 12 months, emphasizing the significant progress made under his leadership.
Maxwell concluded by urging a unified focus on achieving World Cup qualification, recognizing the substantial improvements under Clarke’s guidance and the collective desire to compete on the world stage.
