Sampdoria Suffer First-Ever Relegation to Serie C

Established in August 1946 through a merger of two clubs, Sampdoria has experienced a historic downturn.

For the first time in their 78-year history, Sampdoria has been relegated to Serie C.

A goalless draw against Juve Stabia in their final Serie B match sealed their fate, leaving them in 18th place, one point behind Salernitana, who secured a relegation play-off spot.

Sampdoria, winners of the Serie A title in 1991 with a legendary squad, had been competing in Serie B since their relegation at the end of the 2022-23 season.

Appointed in June 2023, former Italian World Cup winner Andrea Pirlo aimed for an immediate return to the top flight, but they fell short in the play-offs.

Despite being initially lauded by club owners, Pirlo’s tenure ended abruptly after three matches, marked by two defeats and a draw.

His replacement, Andrea Sottil, achieved a Coppa Italia victory against Genoa, but his own short-lived stint concluded after four wins in 14 games.

Leonardo Semplici took the helm, only to face fan backlash after a 3-0 home defeat, resulting in the team bus being targeted by angry supporters.

Semplici’s dismissal in April brought Alberico Evani as the fourth coach of the season, assisted by club legends Attilio Lombardo and Roberto Mancini.

An initial victory offered hope, but subsequent results proved insufficient to prevent relegation to Serie C, marking a significant low point in the club’s history.
