British duo Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski have advanced to the third round of the US Open men’s doubles competition, securing a three-set victory over unseeded Americans Maxwell Exsted and Cooper Woestendick.

The sixth-seeded team is seeking their first major title together, having previously reached the final of the French Open earlier in the year.

Salisbury previously captured three successive men’s doubles titles at Flushing Meadows from 2021 to 2023 alongside American Rajeev Ram, including a victory over Skupski and his then-partner Wesley Koolhof in 2022.

The British pair, who won their first-round match in straight sets, faced a sterner test on Sunday.

After claiming the first set 6-4 and breaking serve in the opening game of the second, they subsequently lost six consecutive games, forcing a decisive third set.

Exsted and Woestendick capitalized on three of their nine break point opportunities in the second set, while saving three of four on their own serve.

However, Salisbury and Skupski regained control, securing a break to love in the fourth game of the final set and conceding only four points on serve to complete a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory.

In other news, Britain’s Marcus Willis, partnering with Poland’s Karol Drzewiecki, also secured a spot in the third round with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (13-11) victory over Jackson Withrow and John Peers.

After winning the second set, Willis and Drzewiecki saved three break points early in the third and maintained their serve throughout to force a tie-break.

Withrow and Peers then failed to convert on three match points, while Willis and Drzewiecki also lost a match point at 10-9 before ultimately converting on their second attempt.

However, Luke Johnson and his Dutch partner Sander Arends were eliminated in the second round, losing to Argentinian duo Tomas Etcheverry and Camilo Ugo 7-5, 7-6 (8-6).

Meanwhile, British interest in the women’s doubles event concluded when Sonay Kartal and Katie Boulter were defeated by 12th seeds Zhang Shuai and Ekatarina Alexandrova in three sets.

The British pair rallied from a set down to force a decider and saved two break points in the second game of the third set.

However, with Kartal and Boulter serving to stay in the match at 5-4, Shuai and Alexandrova pushed the game to deuce before converting their first match point, securing a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory and setting up a match against wildcard entrants Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez.
