Ruth Jones, best known for her role in “Gavin and Stacey,” has expressed her enthusiasm for her inaugural non-comedic role in a prominent Netflix crime drama. BBC News reports on the actress’s latest venture.
Jones portrays private investigator Elena Ravenscroft in “Run Away,” an eight-part series adapted from the novel by Harlan Coben.
Despite her extensive background in comedy, Jones revealed to BBC Radio 2 that this marks her first foray into dramatic acting.
Since its debut on the streaming platform on January 1, “Run Away” has garnered over 12.7 million views, second only to the final season of “Stranger Things” in popularity.
The series centers on Simon Greene, played by James Nesbitt, who partners with Elena Ravenscroft, an investigator and former police officer, to locate his daughter Paige, who has disappeared after running away from home.
During an interview on Radio 2’s breakfast show, Jones explained what drew her to the role: “I read the script, and the first thing I noticed about Elena was that she steals a dog from a park, which appealed to my sense of humor.”
“Then, you discover she has a hidden life. Elena has a lot going on, which I immediately loved, and it’s a type of role I’ve never played before.”
“I was genuinely excited.”
This adaptation marks the 13th of Coben’s books to be adapted for the screen, with a 14th adaptation anticipated later this year.
Nesbitt, who has previously collaborated with Coben, commented: “Harlan creates extraordinary worlds for ordinary people.
“People are so invested in these stories because they know it’s like a rollercoaster; they know that [Coben] is a juggernaut, and the show is a juggernaut that will take them on twists and turns.”
“As thrilling, dark, and complicated as it is, people can also see the human element in Harlan’s work.”
Jones added, “The minds that create dramas like that are incredible because you look at it and wonder how all these threads come together.”
Jones also mentioned her cameo on the Radio 4 drama “The Archers,” which she said she listens to every night.
She stated, “I’m a big fan of ‘The Archers.'”
“They invited me to visit the studios where they were recording their New Year’s Eve special.”
“I was a bit hesitant because I thought, ‘Is it going to ruin it for me?’ because when you listen to radio dramas, you imagine what everyone looks like.”
“But I went, and it was so lovely to meet them, and I told them, ‘You’re in my bed every night!'”
Jones’s last appearance on Radio 2’s Breakfast Show was as a host, where she and co-writer James Corden presented a “Gavin and Stacey” takeover two days before the program’s record-breaking finale on Christmas Day 2024.
In addition to playing songs from the iconic show, they were joined by cast members Joanna Page, Mathew Horne, Larry Lamb, Alison Steadman, and Rob Brydon for a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
