Richardson Fails to Qualify for World Championships 200m After Recent Controversy

Sha’Carri Richardson secured a bronze medal in the 200m at the 2023 World Championships.

Sha’Carri Richardson narrowly missed qualification for the 200m final at the US Track and Field Championships in Oregon, finishing just one-hundredth of a second outside the qualifying time.

Richardson placed fourth in her heat with a time of 22.56 seconds, a hair’s breadth behind Madison Whyte, who claimed the final qualifying spot with 22.55 seconds.

While she receives an automatic entry to the World Championships in September for the 100m as the defending champion, her aspirations to compete in the 200m have been dashed.

The setback concludes a challenging week for Richardson, the 100m silver medalist at the Paris 2024 Olympics, following her recent arrest related to a domestic violence allegation.

The 25-year-old was detained last Sunday at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport after an altercation involving her boyfriend, fellow Team USA athlete Christian Coleman.

According to a police report, video footage appeared to show Richardson pushing Coleman into a wall before throwing an object at him.

Richardson was released on Monday following the incident.

The police report also indicated that Coleman declined to participate in the investigation and “declined to be a victim.”

Following her heat in Eugene, Richardson declined to comment to reporters, instead offering a “blessed day.”

In the wake of her arrest, USA Track and Field released a statement acknowledging awareness of the reports but stated they would “not be commenting on this matter.”

Coleman finished sixth in Sunday’s 200m men’s final, while world champion Noah Lyles secured first place with a time of 19.63 seconds.

“She’s a human being and a great person,” Coleman remarked about Richardson.

“She’s going to bounce back because she’s the best female athlete in the world.”

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden achieved a personal best of 21.84 seconds in the women’s 200m final, completing a sprint double after winning the 100m two days prior.
