Rashford nets first Barcelona goals in win over Newcastle
Marcus Rashford’s resurgence gained further momentum with a stellar performance for Barcelona, marking his Champions League debut for the club with two goals against Newcastle.
The 27-year-old England international, aiming to revitalize his career after a challenging period at Manchester United and a subsequent loan spell at Aston Villa, appears to be thriving under the guidance of head coach Hansi Flick at Barcelona.
Having faced scrutiny regarding his opportunity at such a high-profile club, Rashford delivered a compelling response during Barcelona’s Champions League encounter with Newcastle at St James’ Park.
Aware of the significance of this platform, Rashford showcased the talent that once defined him, signaling a potential return to his peak form.
Adding to the occasion, England head coach Thomas Tuchel was in attendance, maintaining his faith in the forward despite his recent nomadic journey.
Rashford hinted at his capabilities with glimpses of brilliance in the first half, notably outmaneuvering Kieran Trippier with a clever dummy, though his initial attempts lacked the desired finish.
The breakthrough arrived in the 58th minute when he converted Jules Kounde’s cross with a well-placed header, leaving Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope with no chance.
This marked Rashford’s first Champions League goal in nearly four years and his first for Barcelona, igniting a memorable performance.
Nine minutes later, Rashford produced a moment of exceptional quality, collecting the ball 20 yards from goal before unleashing a stunning strike that grazed the underside of the bar en route to the net, leaving Pope rooted to the spot.
Rashford celebrated in front of the Barcelona supporters, silencing the earlier taunts from the Newcastle faithful.
The cameras captured Tuchel’s reaction, maintaining a composed expression while likely acknowledging the significance of Rashford’s contributions.
Superb Rashford sinks Newcastle as Barcelona triumph
Prior to Thursday’s match, Rashford’s last Champions League goal was in October 2021 for Manchester United against Atalanta.
Barcelona coach Flick expressed confidence in Rashford’s potential: “We always see this from Rashford in training and we saw it here. I’m happy for him.
“In the offense we have a lot of good players and he’s one. I’m happy to have him. He gives us more options to follow the match. It’s great to have him.
“These two goals will help a lot to get Marcus to the next step. It’s so important he has the confidence and feels OK. These goals are unbelievable for him for the next steps.”
Flick’s empathetic approach may prove ideal for Rashford, who seeks to overcome past setbacks and rediscover his confidence.
His performance following the opening goal reflected a player liberated from pressure, showcasing a renewed sense of freedom.
Rashford commented: “Playing for Barca is an amazing experience. I’ve always been a huge admirer of Barcelona. We want to win as much as possible.
“100% I’m full of excitement. I’m very motivated and determined. The quality we have in the team excites me. It’s so refreshing to play with these players.”
While the absence of Barcelona’s young talent, Lamine Yamal, may have presented Rashford with the opportunity to start, he seized the moment emphatically.
Despite sharing the attacking line-up with established stars Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha, Rashford emerged as the standout performer.
Rashford joins a growing list of players who have departed Manchester United and subsequently demonstrated their value elsewhere, echoing the success of Scott McTominay at Napoli.
Former Old Trafford forward Anthony Elanga, now at Newcastle, showcased glimpses of his ability, notably creating a first-half opportunity for Harvey Barnes.
Former United goalkeeper Dean Henderson has achieved FA Cup success and earned England recognition at Crystal Palace, while Rasmus Hojlund has made a goal-scoring start at Napoli.
Left-back Alvaro Carreras, sold to Benfica in January 2024, has recently joined Real Madrid in a reported £50m deal.
“Marcus showed what a top, top player he is. We forgot about his talent at Manchester United but he showed he is a real top talent and back to the old Marcus,” said former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt on Champions League Match of the Day.
“His work-rate as well, he was very positive in what he was doing. From a young boy he has always threatened a goal and the goal was an amazing header.
“It was an unbelievable strike [for the second goal] and he has got that in his locker. He is a great striker of the ball and he was the best player.
“Ruben Amorim will be thinking ‘what have I done, I’ve let that go’ when Manchester United are struggling. You need to be loved and he needs an arm around him and when he has that he has shown what he can do.”
Rashford received a standing ovation from the traveling supporters upon his substitution in the 82nd minute, with further acclaim following the final whistle.
Having taken a significant step towards redemption, the question remains whether Rashford can leverage the Barcelona stage to solidify his career trajectory.
