The Metropolitan Police has confirmed it is investigating allegations of drug use among individuals associated with the BBC’s *Strictly Come Dancing*.
In a statement, the Met Police stated that they had “received an allegation about drug related offences.”
“Police are assessing the information and further enquiries are taking place to establish whether there is evidence of a criminal offence being committed,” the statement continued.
The BBC has stated it maintains “clear protocols and policies in place” for addressing any serious complaints brought to its attention.
The Metropolitan Police’s involvement follows the BBC’s launch of an internal investigation earlier this month into alleged drug use by two unnamed personalities affiliated with the program.
This internal inquiry was initiated subsequent to a report published in the Sun on Sunday, which alleged that the purported drug use by these individuals was a matter of widespread discussion within the show’s production environment.
Sources at BBC News indicate that the corporation has engaged the services of a law firm to assist in conducting the probe.
On Sunday, the Sun reported that the BBC had referred the matter to law enforcement.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police subsequently confirmed that the force had “received an allegation about drug related offences” on Tuesday, August 12.
The BBC has stated it will refrain from commenting on any active police investigation.
However, the broadcaster reiterated a previous statement, which reads: “We have clear protocols and policies in place for dealing with any serious complaint raised with us.
“We would always encourage people to speak to us if they have concerns. It would not be appropriate for us to comment further.”
*Strictly Come Dancing*, which has been broadcast since 2004, has faced various controversies over the years pertaining to the conduct of certain professional dancers and celebrity contestants.
Nevertheless, it is understood that this represents the first instance of the BBC liaising with the police regarding allegations directly linked to the program.
