A shooting in Pennsylvania, United States, has resulted in the deaths of three police officers and critical injuries to two others, authorities have reported. The officers were reportedly following up on a “domestic-related” investigation.

According to Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Colonel Christopher Paris, the suspect was fatally shot by law enforcement officials.

The incident occurred shortly after 2:00 PM local time (18:00 GMT). Visuals from the scene depicted a police officer being transported by a medical helicopter.

As a result of the shooting, a nearby school district in Spring Grove, Pennsylvania – a town of approximately 2,500 residents – was briefly placed under a shelter-in-place order. Authorities later confirmed that the school was not directly affected.

Officials have stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The shooting unfolded in a rural area of York County, specifically in North Codorus Township, located about 100 miles (160km) west of Philadelphia.

Authorities have indicated that officers were present at the location as part of an investigation that commenced the previous day.

Commissioner Paris stated that details are limited due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro arrived at the scene on Wednesday afternoon and met with the families of the deceased officers, according to local news reports.

“We grieve for the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, served this country,” Shapiro conveyed.

“This kind of violence is not OK, we need to do better as a society.”

Governor Shapiro subsequently ordered all flags throughout the state to be flown at half-staff in tribute to the fallen officers.

All Pennsylvania state flags will be lowered at all public buildings and grounds throughout the commonwealth.

FBI Director Kash Patel affirmed that agents were on-site providing support to local and state partners.

“Our prayers are with the officers, their families, and the entire York County community,” Patel stated in a released statement.
