Norwegian Skier Dies Following Lightning Strike

Groenvold secured an Olympic ski cross bronze in 2010.

Audun Groenvold, Olympic medalist and former Norwegian skier, has tragically passed away at the age of 49 after being struck by lightning.

The Norwegian Ski Federation (NSF) confirmed that Groenvold was struck during a cabin excursion and, despite immediate hospitalization, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday night.

Groenvold initially competed with Norway’s Alpine skiing team before transitioning to freestyle and ski cross disciplines.

His career highlight includes a ski cross bronze medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics held in Vancouver.

Post-retirement from professional skiing, the NSF noted Groenvold’s contributions as a national team coach and a valued member of the NSF board.

The federation expressed profound sorrow at the loss of “an outstanding athlete” and “prominent figure,” extending heartfelt condolences to “Audun’s family, friends, and all those who held him dear.”
