New Zealand Clinches Series Victory Over England

England is slated to compete against Jamaica in December.

England succumbed to a 55-49 defeat against New Zealand in the decisive match of their three-game series in Manchester.

The Roses previously clinched a memorable victory on Sunday, leveling the series after New Zealand’s triumph in the opening match on Saturday.

However, facing an enthusiastic home crowd at the AO Arena, England struggled with unforced errors, allowing the Silver Ferns to capitalize through efficiency and patience.

Despite leading after the first quarter—a first for them in the series—the Roses were unable to maintain control.

During a cautious opening quarter, both teams grappled for possession, yet the Roses managed a slight 14-11 advantage.

The Silver Ferns swiftly closed the gap in the second quarter as England’s sloppiness and mounting errors proved costly.

Head coach Jess Thirlby adjusted the attack, replacing Olivia Tchine with Helen Housby at goal shooter, aiming to reignite the potency England displayed in the second game.

Nevertheless, the hosts couldn’t prevent New Zealand from seizing the lead, taking a two-goal advantage into halftime.

England rallied after the interval, much to the delight of the home crowd, with London Pulse defensive players Halimat Adio and Funmi Fadoju working diligently to regain possession, while Housby and Lois Pearson combined effectively in the shooting circle.

However, the Roses faltered in the final minutes of the third quarter, losing momentum and allowing New Zealand to secure a 42-38 lead going into the final period.

Fadoju intercepted a loose Silver Ferns pass early in the fourth quarter as England sought to reduce the deficit. Yet, defensive efforts weren’t consistently rewarded with goals, allowing New Zealand to further extend their lead.

Shooter Grace Nweke maintained consistency under the post, while Maddy Gordon excelled at centre.

Despite Thirlby’s changes in attack, no combination achieved the desired impact, and the Roses were unable to close the gap.

Looking ahead, they will face Jamaica in December, followed by South Africa in January, continuing their preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
