Collin Morikawa clinched victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am with a decisive birdie on the 18th, marking his first PGA Tour win in over two years.
After holding a two-stroke lead with two holes remaining, the American saw his advantage evaporate as Min Woo Lee of Australia birdied the final hole, compounded by Morikawa’s own bogey on the 17th.
The duo found themselves tied at 21-under, soon joined by Austria’s Sepp Straka, raising the specter of a potential playoff.
However, following a 20-minute delay before his second shot due to Jacob Bridgeman’s battle with strong winds, Morikawa reached the green and subsequently sank a short putt, carding a 67 to break his trophy drought.
“This is special for numerous reasons,” the 29-year-old remarked post-victory.
“I’ve devoted countless hours, even nights – perhaps too many – contemplating golf.”
“I maintained faith in myself. Truthfully, at the start of this week, it didn’t seem feasible.”
Scottie Scheffler, the world number one, launched himself into contention with a nine-under 63, including three eagles, to set the clubhouse lead at 20 under after starting the day eight shots behind.
Morikawa, a two-time major champion, surged to 22 under with birdies on the 15th and 16th before his stumble at the 17th.
Overnight leader Akshay Bhatia could not maintain his momentum, finishing with a level-par 72, leaving him at 19 under.
Tommy Fleetwood of England had a late opportunity to reach 21 under, but his eagle chip fell short on the final hole, placing him alongside Scheffler in fourth.
Defending champion Rory McIlroy carded eight birdies in a bogey-free 64 – his best round of the tournament – to finish at -17 alongside England’s Matt Fitzpatrick.
“Overall, there was some very good play this week. I’m certainly encouraged heading into next week,” said McIlroy, the world number two, who will next compete at the Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles.
