Rory McIlroy missed the cut at the Canadian Open after a disappointing eight-over-par 78.
This marks his first missed cut since last July’s Open Championship. The 2019 and 2022 Canadian Open champion finished the second round at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley at nine-over-par, a significant 22 strokes behind leader Cameron Champ.
McIlroy’s round included a quadruple-bogey eight on the fifth hole, and further dropped shots on holes eight, ten, eleven, and thirteen. A birdie on the fifteenth was followed by another bogey on seventeen, leaving his final birdie on eighteen insufficient to make the cut.
Cameron Champ, an eighth alternate who only arrived Wednesday morning, shot a four-under 66 to extend his lead to two strokes over Andrew Putnam.
Shane Lowry also performed well, finishing at eight under par, while Thorbjorn Olesen, Richard Lee, Nick Taylor, and Victor Perez sit at nine under.
Justin Rose, McIlroy’s Augusta play-off opponent, also missed the cut at one-under par after a two-stroke penalty for unintentionally moving his ball while addressing a loose impediment.
Matthieu Pavon also had a difficult round, carding a ten-over-par 80, including a 12 on the tenth hole.
