Matthew Rhys, the Emmy Award-winning actor, is set to star as the mayor of a seemingly cursed island town in the upcoming television series, *Widow’s Bay*.
In the Apple TV+ series, Rhys, portraying the character of Tom Loftis, 52, plays a mayor striving to revitalize his struggling community, while battling the perception of being “soft and cowardly” amongst its residents.
The 10-episode drama, described as a blend of horror and comedy, will premiere on April 29th. The setting is a peculiar town located 40 miles (64km) off the New England coast.
Loftis is determined to attract tourists and improve the lives of his teenage son, despite facing challenges such as unreliable mobile service, the absence of Wi-Fi, and a deeply superstitious population that holds him in low regard.
According to the show’s official synopsis, Loftis’s plan initially succeeds as tourists begin to arrive. However, the locals’ premonitions soon prove accurate.
After decades of tranquility, the old, seemingly far-fetched stories begin to resurface.
*Widow’s Bay*, which interweaves horror with character-driven comedy, features a supporting cast including Kate O’Flynn, Stephen Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll, and Dale Dickey.
In addition to his starring role, Rhys also holds an executive producer credit on the series.
Hiro Murai, the Emmy-winning director and executive producer of *The Bear*, directed five episodes of *Widow’s Bay*, adding to the series’ prestige.
The Welsh actor has cultivated a career portraying characters who, beneath a composed exterior, harbor significant inner turmoil.
Rhys was recently seen in Netflix’s thriller, *The Beast in Me*, where he played property tycoon Nile Jarvis. He is also known for his Emmy-winning performance as a KGB sleeper agent in *The Americans* (2018).
Last November, Rhys returned to Wales for a national tour of *Playing Burton*, a one-man stage production in which he portrayed the legendary Richard Burton, raising funds for the Welsh National Theatre in celebration of Burton’s centenary.
Not even the viewers know who host Claudia Winkleman has assigned as the fourth “secret traitor”.
