Malcolm Marx has won the World Cup twice
South Africa’s Malcolm Marx has been honored as the men’s 15s player of the year at the prestigious World Rugby Awards. He becomes the first hooker to receive the accolade since 2001.
The 31-year-old has been a consistent presence in the Springboks’ lineup, starting in 11 of their 13 Tests this year and contributing five tries.
Marx was selected from a strong field of nominees, including fellow South Africans Pieter-Steph du Toit and Ox Nche, as well as France’s Louis Bielle-Biarrey.
The only other hooker to have won the award is Keith Wood, who achieved the honor in its inaugural year.
Marx’s contributions have been instrumental in South Africa’s impressive year, which saw them successfully defend their Rugby Championship title and suffer only two defeats.
In another category, New Zealand’s Fabian Holland, a 23-year-old second row, was named men’s 15s breakthrough player of the year.
Holland has made 12 appearances for New Zealand since his debut against France in July, featuring prominently in their recent 52-26 victory over Wales.
He prevailed over contenders such as England flanker Henry Pollock, aged 20, South Africa’s Ethan Hooker, and Australia’s Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii for the award.
Chile’s Santiago Pedrero secured the men’s 15s try of the year accolade for his exceptional score against Samoa in World Cup qualifying, a result of intricate teamwork.
Earlier in September, Canada’s Sophie de Goede was recognized as the women’s player of the year, while England’s John Mitchell, the head coach who led them to World Cup victory, was named World Rugby’s coach of the year.
