Live-Action “Call of Duty” Film in Development

The creators of the globally renowned video game, Call of Duty, have announced a partnership to develop a live-action film adaptation.

The franchise, which debuted in 2003, has become a cultural phenomenon, consistently achieving top sales figures on both console and PC platforms.

Activision, the game’s publisher, revealed its collaboration with Paramount Pictures to produce a blockbuster film “designed to thrill its massive global fan base”.

Details regarding potential storylines or casting choices remain undisclosed. However, Paramount CEO David Ellison stated, “As a lifelong fan of Call of Duty, this is truly a dream come true.”

Mr. Ellison added that he has dedicated “countless hours” to playing the Call of Duty games, emphasizing that translating the series to the big screen is “an honor and a responsibility that we don’t take lightly”.

Activision president Rob Kostich conveyed that the film will strive to capture the imaginative spirit of the games, aiming to “create an unforgettable blockbuster movie experience that our community loves, and one that also excites and inspires new fans of the franchise”.

The Call of Duty series encompasses 23 main installments, each set in distinct historical periods and featuring narratives loosely based on real-world conflicts and events.

According to Activision, the series has sold over 500 million units since its inception.

This announcement aligns with a growing trend of video game adaptations, including projects based on The Legend of Zelda, Elden Ring, and The Sims.

This surge in adaptations follows the commercial triumph of 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the forthcoming A Minecraft Movie, alongside the popularity of television series such as The Last of Us and Fallout.

Paramount Pictures, known for the successful Sonic the Hedgehog film series, is also the studio behind action blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible.

Following its merger with Skydance Media last year, the studio has secured significant deals, including a $7.7 billion agreement for the rights to the mixed martial arts organization, UFC.
