Poland’s all-time leading scorer, Robert Lewandowski, has announced his withdrawal from international duty, citing a loss of confidence in manager Michal Probierz following his removal as team captain.
The 36-year-old striker, boasting an impressive record of 85 goals in 158 appearances for his nation, will not feature in the current international window.
A statement released by the Polish Football Association, external on Sunday confirmed that Probierz personally informed Lewandowski, the team, and staff of his decision to appoint Inter Milan’s Piotr Zielinski as the new captain.
Subsequently, Barcelona’s Lewandowski shared a social media post stating: “Given the circumstances and the erosion of trust in the coach, I’ve decided to forgo playing for the Polish national team for as long as he remains in charge. I hope to have another opportunity to play for the world’s best fans.”
The Polish FA further announced, external that Probierz will address questions at a press conference on Monday, ahead of Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Finland, joined by the new captain, 31-year-old Zielinski.
Probierz, 52, assumed the coaching role in September 2023, but his tenure saw Poland finish bottom of their Euro 2024 group, marking their early exit from the tournament. However, Poland currently leads their World Cup 2026 qualifying group after two victories, with the Netherlands in third place on three points after one match.
