Iran’s NPT Membership: A Matter for Relevant Authorities

BAKU /Trend/ – The question of Iran’s continued participation in the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) requires examination by the relevant authorities.

As Trend reports from a June 16th briefing in Tehran, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, İsmail Begaei, made this statement.

He emphasized Iran’s awareness of its NPT obligations and its stance against any nuclear weapons presence in West Asia, advocating for a region free of weapons of mass destruction.

Begaei reiterated Iran’s condemnation of all weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons.

Meanwhile, Iranian parliamentarian Mehdi Kouchakzadeh has drafted a bill for Iran’s withdrawal from the NPT. This bill is currently under review by the parliamentary auditing institution. Following review, it requires parliamentary endorsement before being added to the parliamentary agenda.

The latest IAEA report, dated May 17th, 2024, indicates that Iran’s stockpile of uranium enriched to 60 percent reached 408.6 kilograms, a 133.8-kilogram increase since February. The report highlights that this enrichment level is a short technical step from 90 percent enrichment. The agency has urged Iran for full and effective cooperation.
