BAKU /Trend/ – The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an international institution with specific responsibilities, and it must fulfill them outside of a political context.
As reported by Trend on Monday, this statement was made by Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ismail Begai during a briefing in Tehran on June 30.
According to him, Iran has demanded that the IAEA Director General perform his duties within the framework of technical responsibilities and not be influenced by certain members of the Agency.
Begai stated that the strategy of the three European countries (Great Britain, France, and Germany) regarding exerting pressure on Iran over the past 20 years is clear.
“Iran has always wanted the Agency to fulfill its mission outside of political prisms. The latest IAEA report on Iran was inappropriate and served as the basis for the adoption of a resolution against the country in the Agency’s Board of Governors,” he added.
Notably, on June 12, at a meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors, a resolution presented by the United States, Great Britain, France, and Germany against Iran was put to a vote. The resolution was adopted by a majority vote, with nineteen countries voting in favor, eleven abstaining, and three countries (Russia, China, and Burkina Faso) voting against. The document notes that since 2019, Iran has repeatedly failed to fulfill its obligations regarding full and timely cooperation with the agency in connection with activities at numerous undeclared sites and with undeclared nuclear material.
It is worth recalling that the latest IAEA report indicated that as of May 17, 2024, the volume of uranium enriched to 60 percent amounted to 408.6 kilograms. Compared to the February report, the amount of uranium enriched to 60 percent increased by 133.8 kilograms. The report notes that enrichment to this level is considered a short technical step to 90 percent enrichment, which is considered a military level. The Agency has called on Iran for full and effective cooperation.
