Barry Island has long been a pilgrimage site for fans eager to glimpse the filming locations of the hit series Gavin and Stacey.
Now, devotees of the beloved comedy have an unprecedented opportunity: the chance to purchase the very property that served as the on-screen home of the iconic character Doris.
Located on Trinity Street in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, the two-bedroom mid-terrace house stands adjacent to the residences of Bryn and Gwen and Stacey.
Prospective buyers should note, however, that the property does not include a complimentary salad.
Doris, played by the late Margaret John, was a cherished friend and next-door neighbour to the Shipman family.
Following John’s passing in 2011, the show’s narrative included a plotline where Doris bequeathed the house to Gavin and Stacey in her will.
Doris was renowned for her candid nature, as well as her infamous refusal to prepare the salad for Neil the Baby’s christening.
Viewers will likely recognise the interior of the property from the 2019 Christmas special, in which Gavin and Stacey hosted both families from Essex and Barry, extending the dining table into the living room.
The kitchen was also the setting for considerable chaos, as Uncle Bryn experienced a meltdown while attempting to cook Christmas dinner, resorting to walkie-talkies to manage his timings and communicate with Gwen.
A video tour of the property, shared online by Chris Davies Estate Agents, has garnered nearly 40,000 likes to date, with one commenter remarking: “That’s not Doris’ house, there is no talc in the bathroom.”
Numerous others have raised the crucial question: “Where’s the salad?”
Andrew Walton, managing director of the agency, reported that interest has been “excellent as a result of the history in the property”.
However, he clarified: “When you whittle it down to genuine enquiries and those that are financially qualified there is a much smaller number.”
Uncle Bryn’s house similarly achieved viral status when it was listed for sale in 2023, generating excitement among fans at the prospect of owning a piece of television history.
Some fans have expressed sadness at the latest sale, suggesting it signifies “the end” of the beloved comedy following its Christmas finale in 2024.
But, as everyone knows, Doris’ house rightfully belongs to Nessa.
