Great Britain Secures Fifth Place at European Athletics Team Championships

Great Britain’s Lina Nielsen, Toby Harries, Emily Newnham, and Samuel Reardon secured third place in the 4x400m mixed relay.

Great Britain concluded the European Athletics Team Championships in Madrid with an overall fifth-place finish.

The British team, led by captain Lawrence Okoye, accumulated 381 points, narrowly trailing the Netherlands in fourth place by 3.5 points and maintaining a three-point lead over Spain in sixth.

Sarah Tait, making her international debut, emerged as a standout performer on the final day, contributing 15 points with a second-place finish in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase, just fractions of a second behind Finland’s Ilona Mononen.

Revee Walcott-Nolan in the women’s 1500m and Toby Harries in the men’s 200m also achieved third-place finishes.

Bekah Walton, after undergoing arm surgery five months prior, threw 58.63m to secure fourth place in the women’s javelin, while Scott Lincoln also finished fourth in the men’s shot put.

Jazmin Sawyers continued her comeback following a 20-month absence due to an Achilles injury, finishing sixth in the women’s long jump.

In the competition’s final event, the 4x400m mixed relay team, consisting of Lina Nielsen, Toby Harries, Emily Newnham, and Samuel Reardon, achieved a third-place finish with a time of three minutes 9.6 seconds, matching second-place Italy’s time and securing the team’s final 14 points.

On Friday, Reardon, 21, set a championship record with a personal best of 44.60 to win the 400m.

This time places the double Olympic bronze medallist seventh on the all-time list for European under-23 athletes.

Eugene Amo-Dadzie, known as the ‘world’s fastest accountant’, clocked 10.07 to claim first place in the men’s 100m.

Italy successfully defended their title, which they won in Poland in 2023.
