A controversial aid operation in Gaza, supported by both Israel and the United States, reports that two of its personnel have been injured in an attack during a relief distribution.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) stated that two militants threw grenades at its aid center located in Khan Younis, attributing responsibility for the incident on Saturday to Hamas.
The injured US workers are reported to be in stable condition and are currently receiving medical care. The GHF added that no other aid workers or civilians were harmed during the attack.
The GHF initiated its operations in May, distributing aid from multiple sites across southern and central Gaza. However, the system has faced widespread criticism for allegedly forcing large numbers of people to navigate through active combat zones.
Since the GHF’s inception, Israeli forces have reportedly killed over 400 Palestinians while they attempted to collect food aid, according to figures from the UN and local medical professionals. Israel maintains that the new distribution system is intended to prevent aid from reaching Hamas.
The attack occurred as Hamas has signaled its readiness to engage in ceasefire negotiations with Israel.
The GHF stated that the incident “occurred at the conclusion of an otherwise successful distribution in which thousands of Gazans safely received food”.
The organization further noted that it had “repeatedly warned of credible threats from Hamas,” which included alleged plans to target American personnel, Palestinian aid workers, and civilians.
Hamas has not yet issued a statement regarding the incident.
Concurrently, Gaza’s civil defense agency reported that 32 Palestinians were killed on Saturday as a result of Israeli military operations.
On Friday, Hamas communicated its willingness to participate in further discussions regarding a ceasefire agreement proposed by the United States.
The proposed plan reportedly involves a phased release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons.
Sources indicate that Hamas is seeking amendments to the draft, including a guarantee from the US that hostilities will not resume once the ceasefire concludes.
Hamas is also reportedly requesting the disbandment of the GHF, with aid distribution being solely managed by the UN and its affiliated partners. Israel has previously rejected such demands.
Fifty hostages remain in captivity in Gaza, with at least 20 believed to be alive.
According to Gaza’s health ministry, Israeli forces have killed at least 70 people in the territory within the past 24 hours.
The ministry reports that the total death toll in Gaza has reached 57,338 during Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas.
The Israeli military initiated its campaign in response to the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals and the abduction of 251 others.
“Antisemitism has no place in Australia,” Anthony Albanese said after the latest in a string of attacks.
The group says it is ready to begin negotiations immediately, as Donald Trump says there can possibly be a deal next week.
The Israel- and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has strongly denied the allegation.
Many children and women were reportedly among those killed when a school in Gaza City and a tent in al-Mawasi were hit.
Francesca Albanese also accuses companies which equip Israel of complicity in war crimes.
