Gauff Mounts Comeback for Victory in Montreal

Coco Gauff recorded 14 double faults despite securing victory over Veronika Kudermetova.

Top-seeded Coco Gauff advanced to the fourth round of the Canadian Open in Montreal following a hard-fought comeback win against Veronika Kudermetova.

The world number two rallied from a set and a break down to claim a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory, securing her place in the tournament’s final 16 for the fifth consecutive time.

The 2025 French Open champion is now set to face the winner of the match between 18-year-old Canadian wildcard Victoria Mboko and Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic.

Fourth seed Mirra Andreeva’s campaign concluded with a 7-6, 6-5 defeat to 28th seed McCartney Kessler, who will proceed to face Ukraine’s 27th seed Marta Kostyuk, following her 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) victory over 15th seed Daria Kasatkina.

China’s Zhu Lin, an unseeded player, also progressed to the fourth round with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 win against Suzan Lamens.

In the men’s bracket in Toronto, third seed Lorenzo Musetti was eliminated from the tournament after a 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 loss to 26th seed Alex Michelsen of the United States in the third round.

Michelsen’s triumph sets the stage for an all-American showdown in the fourth round, where he potentially will face either Learner Tien or Reilly Opelka.

Eighth seed Casper Ruud also secured his spot in the fourth round with a 7-6, 6-4 victory against Nuno Borges and is slated to compete against 11th seed Karen Khachanov, who defeated Emilio Nava 6-7, 6-4, 6-1.

Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo prevailed over compatriot Tomas Martin Etcheverry in straight sets and will now face either top seed Alexander Zverev or Matteo Arnaldi in the subsequent round.
