A new pilot scheme in Wiltshire will provide free swimming lessons to over 6,000 children this summer.
The initiative extends to children participating in Wiltshire Council’s FUEL programme, as well as secondary school students eligible for free school meals.
Eligible children can access up to 10 lessons at council-operated leisure centers with swimming pools, including Marlborough Leisure Centre and Calne Community Campus.
Councillor Jon Hubbard, Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for education, noted that the scheme was made possible through careful allocation of existing resources.
Speaking to BBC Radio Wiltshire, Mr. Hubbard explained that the £45,000 required for the swimming lessons was sourced from Public Health England funding and the children’s services budget.
“Providing these positive and engaging activities for young people during the extended summer break is a vital offering,” he stated.
“We aim to create an environment where they can enjoy themselves, participate in enriching activities, and build lasting, positive memories.”
He confirmed that schools have already informed parents of their eligibility and extended invitations to the FUEL program.
Parents of children qualifying for free school meals need to present proof of entitlement at the participating swimming pools.
A comprehensive list of participating swimming pools is available [here].
Wiltshire Council has indicated that a review of the scheme will be conducted in the autumn following its completion.
