Lennon Miller, alongside his father Lee, Lewis Ferguson, and his father Derek, represent a compelling narrative in Scottish football.
Domestic accolades and international representation mark a successful career. But what surpasses such achievements? Witnessing your son follow in your footsteps, undoubtedly.
This is the reality for Derek Ferguson, the former Rangers and Scotland midfielder, whose son Lewis has cultivated a devoted following in Italy.
The 25-year-old Bologna captain and midfielder played a pivotal role in securing the club’s first major trophy in 51 years, triumphing in the Coppa Italia final against AC Milan.
Speculation links the Scotland international with Juventus, yet Ferguson senior advises his son to savor his recent success.
“I cried openly at the final whistle,” Ferguson shared with BBC Radio Scotland’s Sportsound. “Overwhelmed with emotion.”
“Embracing him, I didn’t want to let go. He’s likely unaccustomed to such displays. Witnessing his joy, and that of his teammates—a truly exceptional group—was incredible.”
“Many players complete their careers without winning anything. These moments must be cherished.”
“I was overjoyed. It was the best night, the best footballing experience of my life. I won cups and league titles, but nothing compared. A truly special moment.”
“We were granted access to the pitch, a surreal experience. The Bologna fans remained, singing passionately. We captured some wonderful photos. He’s incredibly happy at Bologna. Extremely happy.”
What’s next for highly-rated Motherwell teenager Miller?
Will Ferguson face intense speculation following his Coppa Italia victory?
Ferguson, alongside fellow Scotland internationals Billy Gilmour (Napoli) and Scott McTominay (also Napoli), participated in Scotland’s recent friendlies against Iceland and Liechtenstein. Motherwell’s 18-year-old Lennon Miller also featured.
The midfielder impressed in Vaduz as Scotland secured a 4-0 victory, following a 3-1 home defeat to Iceland.
Miller has one year remaining on his Motherwell contract, leaving limited opportunities for the club to command a substantial transfer fee.
“His playing style is perfectly suited to Italian football,” Derek Ferguson noted.
“I’ve watched Lennon since he was 16; he’s significantly improved this season. His potential is evident.”
Miller’s father, Lee, a former Scotland striker with Aberdeen, Dundee United, and Heart of Midlothian, indicated his son’s openness to a move abroad.
“They’re receiving opportunities, a platform to showcase their talent, and significant faith from foreign clubs,” he commented on Scots playing abroad.
“This will benefit the national team in the years to come.”
Miller senior revealed that Lennon actively sought advice from the Scotland players based overseas.
“He’s confident but not arrogant,” Miller stated. “It’s gratifying to see him thrive in this environment.”
“He’s mature enough to advance his career, and he needs to do so independently. I’m confident he’d excel abroad. It would elevate his game.”
“That’s his playing style. He organizes, maintains possession under pressure. As his father, watching him be himself was incredibly proud. Unchanged for anyone.”
Miller admits to being an anxious spectator, experiencing nervousness and excitement. His son’s next destination remains unclear.
“He’s resuming training with Motherwell tomorrow,” he said.
“We’ll wait and see, but ultimately, he desires to play football. He aims to further his career, and there’s been much discussion about various clubs.
“Regarding decisions, we’ll weigh the pros and cons of any offers. However, currently, no concrete bids have been received for Lennon.”
