Owen Farrell’s last match for Saracens was their Premiership semi-final loss to Northampton Saints last year.
Former England captain Owen Farrell is reportedly nearing a remarkable return to Saracens.
The 33-year-old reportedly desires a return to England after a challenging season with French club Racing 92.
While a formal agreement remains unsigned, a transfer is anticipated this summer, pending a resolution between Saracens and Racing.
Farrell enjoyed a sixteen-season tenure in north London, securing six Premiership titles and three European Cups.
He stepped away from international rugby post the 2023 Rugby World Cup, where he surpassed Jonny Wilkinson’s record, becoming England’s all-time leading points scorer and led the team to a third-place finish.
While some reports suggest a five-year player-coach contract ,external, sources indicate a two-year playing contract is more likely.
Saracens seek cover for injured Alex Lozowski and have salary cap flexibility to fill the roster spot for next season.
Saracens director of rugby, Mark McCall, recently stated that Farrell would be a valuable asset both on and off the field.
“He doesn’t have to play 10, he can play other positions as well,” McCall noted. “For our developing young players, it would be invaluable to have him. Owen readily shares his knowledge and experience.”
Irrespective of the precise terms and length of his return, a coaching transition at Saracens seems likely.
Farrell’s father, Andy, also transitioned into coaching at the club following his playing career, becoming a highly respected coach with England, Ireland, and the British and Irish Lions.
Should Farrell’s return be finalized before next season, he would be eligible for England’s upcoming tour of Argentina and the USA.
However, England sources have downplayed the possibility of a swift return to the national squad.
Farrell has battled a persistent hip injury this season and recently suffered a concussion.
