Farage Cleared of Wrongdoing After Spending Review

Nigel Farage will not be subject to a police investigation regarding allegations that Reform UK exceeded campaign spending limits during the 2024 general election.

Essex Police have stated that a formal inquiry into the Clacton MP is not possible, as the alleged infraction occurred more than a year prior.

This decision follows claims from a former member of Mr. Farage’s campaign team, who alleged that Reform UK surpassed the legally mandated spending limit of £20,660.

A police spokeswoman confirmed: “Any prosecution for such an offence must commence within one year.”

She clarified that an “allegation around misreported expenditure by a political candidate” in July 2024 was reported to authorities on December 5th.

“It has been concluded that this report falls outside of the stated statutory time limit, and no investigation can take place,” the spokeswoman added.

The claims originated from Richard Everett, a former Reform campaigner.

Mr. Everett alleged that the party failed to properly declare expenditures related to leaflets, banners, utility bills, and the refurbishment of a bar within the Clacton constituency office.

Documentation related to these allegations was initially provided to the Metropolitan Police, who subsequently transferred the case to Essex Police.

Essex Police cited the Representation of the People Act 1983, which stipulates a one-year statute of limitations for investigating such alleged offences.

However, it remains possible that Mr. Farage could face an investigation conducted by the Electoral Commission.

He assumed leadership of Reform UK in June 2024, approximately one month prior to the general election.

Mr. Farage successfully secured the seat of Clacton in Essex, defeating the Conservative candidate with a majority exceeding 8,000 votes.

Reform UK has been contacted for comment regarding this matter.
