Eni Aluko Steps Down from Awards Role Following Ian Wright’s Critique

Eni Aluko earned 105 caps representing England.

Eni Aluko, the former England striker, has withdrawn from her presenting duties at this week’s Women’s Football Awards amidst controversy over remarks made about fellow pundit Ian Wright.

Last week, the 38-year-old publicly criticised Wright, pointing out that he should recognise the limited opportunities available for female pundits in women’s football.

Aluko, who also played for Chelsea, later issued an apology for her statements, but Wright responded that he could not accept the apology and expressed his disappointment with her comments.

The Arsenal legend and former England forward, a longtime advocate of women’s football who regularly contributes as a pundit for Lionesses matches, has received widespread support in light of the incident.

In this context, Aluko will step back from co-presenting the awards alongside Gabby Logan and Jamie Carragher, stating her wish not to “deflect” from the focus on nominees in London on 1 May.

“I’ve decided to take a step back from being part of the hosting line-up this year,” Aluko explained.

“I want the joy, recognition, and celebration of this event to remain undistracted. This occasion is for the players, coaches, fans, and everyone who has worked tirelessly for the advancement of the women’s game.”

Wright’s Instagram response to Aluko’s remarks has garnered over 137,000 likes, including endorsements from England internationals Mary Earps, Alessia Russo, and Alex Greenwood.

The 61-year-old said he remains committed to supporting football, reflecting on his 15-year career beginning at Crystal Palace in 1985.

“Given that women’s football was restricted by men for half a century, the sport faces significant systemic challenges. Addressing these issues will require collective effort,” added Wright, who has previously worked with Aluko.

“As the nation credited with creating modern football, we have a responsibility to set a standard for the women’s game.

“Personally, I will always seek to give back to football. The sport has given me so much.”
