Energy Minister Faces Inquiry over Tashkent Power Outages

A Senatorial inquiry has been directed to the Minister of Energy regarding ongoing power supply issues in the city of Tashkent, according to a press release from the Senate.

The inquiry addresses the increasing frequency of power outages in Tashkent, which are reportedly having a detrimental effect on the daily lives of residents, social infrastructure, and business operations.

“The public and business owners are lodging numerous complaints about 3-4 hour power interruptions that are negatively impacting not only the daily lives of citizens, but also the operations of businesses. Problems are also arising in the stable operation of social infrastructure facilities,” the statement reads.

The inquiry further highlights that disruptions to traffic light systems are hindering traffic management, posing a threat to road safety. Additionally, failures in cooling systems at production and commercial facilities are being recorded, leading to significant financial losses. Residents are also experiencing damage to household appliances due to power surges and outages.

Article 39 of the Law “On Electric Power Industry” stipulates that electricity consumers have the right to receive a reliable and quality power supply. Furthermore, Article 61 of the same law states that the termination or limitation of supply can only be carried out to prevent accidents or eliminate breakdowns.

In light of these issues, Sayyora Abdikarimova, Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agrarian, Water Management Issues and Ecology, has submitted a Senatorial inquiry to the Minister of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov, requesting clarification on the matter.
