Emma Watson Receives Driving Ban for Speeding Violation

Emma Watson, best known for her role in the Harry Potter film series, has been handed a six-month driving ban following a speeding violation.

The actress, famed for portraying Hermione Granger, was recorded driving at 38mph in a 30mph zone in Oxford on the evening of July 31st of the previous year while operating a blue Audi.

Prior to this infraction, Ms. Watson’s driving record already included nine penalty points, according to court proceedings.

The 35-year-old, currently a student, was ordered to pay a total of £1,044 during a hearing held at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Ms. Watson was not present for the five-minute hearing. Requests for comment have been directed to representatives for the actress.

Mark Haslam, Ms. Watson’s legal counsel, informed the court that his client is a student, adding, “She is in a position to pay the fine.”

The actress has been pursuing a master’s degree in creative writing at the University of Oxford since 2023.

Ms. Watson rose to prominence in 2001 with the release of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” alongside co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint.

She appeared in a total of eight Harry Potter films, concluding in 2011, before taking on roles in films such as “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Bling Ring,” and “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.”

Ms. Watson’s most recent film appearance was in Greta Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation of “Little Women.” In 2023, she launched a sustainable gin brand with her brother.

Currently, a new television adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books is in production, featuring Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout as Ron.

The cast also includes John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Hagrid, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

The HBO-produced series is projected to span a decade.

In related news, Zoe Wanamaker, another actress known for her role in the Harry Potter franchise, was also fined for speeding on the same day and in the same court as Ms. Watson.

Ms. Wanamaker, who played Madam Hooch, was caught speeding on August 7, 2024, on the M4 in Newbury, Berkshire.

The court heard that the 76-year-old was driving at 46mph in a 40mph zone.

She also received a £1,044 fine and a six-month driving ban.

Ms. Wanamaker’s lawyer, Duncan Jones, stated that she was not requesting “special treatment” and accepted the fine.

Similar to Ms. Watson, Ms. Wanamaker had accumulated nine points on her license before the speeding incident.

District Judge Arvind Sharma, during sentencing, added three points to both actresses’ licenses, resulting in a six-month disqualification for both.

Card tricks coach Greg Chipman, from Doncaster, says the actor was a “fast learner”.

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker, who left in May, is still the corporation’s top earner.

The actors have been cast in Christopher Nolan’s new film The Odyssey.

“May the Toys Be With You” opens at Lynn Museum in King’s Lynn on 15 July.
