Vaibhav Suryavanshi currently holds the highest strike-rate among all batters in this season’s Indian Premier League (IPL).
Fourteen-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi is “only going to improve,” yet will need robust support as he navigates the pressures of sudden fame, according to Rajasthan Royals coach and Indian cricket icon Rahul Dravid.
Opening for the Royals, Suryavanshi delivered a remarkable century from just 35 balls against Gujarat Titans on Monday, becoming the youngest player to reach a hundred in men’s T20 cricket.
“It’s crucial to provide a support system that helps him manage this attention, while also giving him the freedom to enjoy his youth,” commented Dravid, who has represented India in 509 matches and has held roles as captain and head coach.

“This is part and parcel of being a cricketer in India—learning how to deal with the spotlight,”
“It’s unrealistic to detach entirely, but equally, it’s important not to become overwhelmed by it.”
“Striking a balance is, perhaps, the best approach in circumstances like these.”
Suryavanshi was acquired at the 2023 auction for £103,789 (1.1 crore rupees) and became the youngest-ever IPL player when he debuted versus Lucknow Super Giants earlier this month.
He attracted widespread attention by hitting a six off his first delivery, ultimately scoring 34 in his initial outing, and followed up with a 101-run knock from 38 balls—including seven fours and 11 sixes—in his third appearance.
His performances have drawn praise from Indian cricket luminaries such as Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh, among others.
“There’s a lot of growth ahead for him,” Dravid remarked, as his team prepares to face Mumbai Indians on Thursday. “No one claims he is the finished article at this stage.”
“It’s important to avoid rushing to define him beyond what he is—a highly promising young talent working diligently on his game.”
Suryavanshi set a record as the youngest player ever signed during an IPL auction, after being selected by Rajasthan Royals in the previous year.
Prior to the auction, the then 13-year-old Suryavanshi made headlines with a 58-ball century for India Under-19s in a youth Test against Australia Under-19s in Chennai.
“He possesses excellent hand speed and bat control, along with an impressive high backlift,” observed Dravid.
“His hand-eye coordination and judgment of length stand out, which has been particularly striking to watch.”
“He’s extraordinarily quick to exploit any ball that’s even slightly short or overpitched,”
