Draper Cruises to Victory Over Brooksby at Queen’s

Jack Draper secures second victory over Jenson Brooksby this year.

British No. 1 Jack Draper advanced to the Queen’s Club Championships Round of 16 with a commanding 6-3, 6-1 win over American Jenson Brooksby.

This marked their second meeting in 2023, following Draper’s earlier victory at Indian Wells in March. Unlike the previous encounter, where Draper overcame a first-set deficit, he dominated this match.

Draper broke Brooksby’s serve in the seventh game, subsequently capitalizing on a double break to secure the first set. Despite the 26°C heat in west London, a gentle breeze offered some relief.

The 23-year-old Draper displayed efficiency, breaking Brooksby’s serve early in the second set. A brief medical timeout did little to disrupt his momentum; he swiftly secured another break to clinch the match.

Draper will next face Australian Alexei Popyrin, who defeated compatriot Aleksandar Vukic in a three-set battle, for a quarter-final berth.

Other Tuesday highlights included Czech Jiri Lehecka’s straight-sets victory over fifth seed Alex de Minaur.

Brooksby’s return to professional tennis in January, following a two-year absence due to injury and a doping suspension, was evident in his performance. However, Draper’s strong showing, marked by a significant reduction in errors after an initial adjustment period, suggests a promising run.

After his initial break, Draper only conceded four more games. This win is a crucial rebound for Draper after his unexpected fourth-round exit at the French Open against Alexander Bublik.

Commenting on his transition from clay to grass, Draper noted the challenges of adapting his timing. He expressed optimism about improving with more match play and practice on the surface, emphasizing his enjoyment of playing on grass.

He concluded by stating his excitement and readiness for the upcoming challenges.
