Donald Glover Publicly Shares Experience of Suffering a Stroke Last Year

Donald Glover, the American actor and rapper known as Childish Gambino, revealed during a recent concert that he suffered a stroke last year.

While performing at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival in Los Angeles on Saturday evening, Glover disclosed the reason for the abrupt cancellation of his tour shortly after its commencement in 2024.

“I had a really bad pain in my head in Louisiana and I did the show anyway,” Glover stated to the audience. “I couldn’t really see well, so when we went to Houston, I went to the hospital and the doctor was like, ‘You had a stroke.'”

Glover initially postponed his New World tour in August 2024, just a month after it began, and subsequently canceled the remaining dates, citing unspecified health concerns.

Videos shared widely on social media captured Glover, 42, sitting on stage during his Saturday performance as soft music played in the background.

Glover, recognized for his musical career and acting roles in series such as “Community,” “Atlanta,” and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” humorously compared his condition to that of fellow actor and comedian Jamie Foxx, who experienced a stroke in 2023, initially manifesting as a severe headache.

Transitioning to a more serious tone, Glover told the crowd that his initial reaction to the stroke diagnosis was a feeling of letting people down. He specifically mentioned his unfulfilled promise to perform in Ireland.

Glover shared that doctors also discovered a hole in his heart, necessitating two surgical procedures.

“They say everybody has two lives and the second life starts when you realise you have one,” Glover reflected.

“You got one life, guys, and I gotta be honest, the life I’ve lived with you guys has been such a blessing,” he expressed to his fans.

When Glover initially postponed his world tour in September 2024, he conveyed on social media the need to prioritize his “physical health for a few weeks,” urging fans to retain their tickets. However, a month later, Glover announced the unavoidable cancellation of the tour due to an “ailment” that required tests, surgery, and a period of recovery.

“As my wife says, which I love, ‘If this life is the flavour, as soon as I’m done, give me another scoop’,” Glover shared with the audience on Saturday, following his revelation about his medical challenges.
